Guten tag!
Let’s start our German lesson for today. The first word we’re going to learn is “Eine” which is the German word for “one.” It’s a fitting word as we’re going to take a look at the very first episode of Sailor Moon Teufel the German language spin-off of Sailor Moon Hell.

Haruka asks the question everybody was thinking
I don’t need to tell you I ran out of footage for awhile. I’ve told you this A BILLION TIMES. Although this never deterred me from wanting to continue the series in some fashion or another. I tried my hand at a fandub instead, in the now-aborted Sailor Moon Hell Saga. This was a nightmare scenario though. I had all of these characters, barely any voice actors and I was trying to do the whole thing with Windows Movie Maker.
I pulled the plug on Saga and thought that was that. I needed raw footage, but it had to be in a different language and without subtitles if I was ever going to do another fansub. I was tossed a bone in the form of a German Dub of Sailor Moon Stars that was high quality and devoid of subtitles.

New Sailor Whores! Same tired jokes.
I was actually a little excited to be working with Sailor Moon Stars footage because there was a crapton of new characters to use. The Outer Senshi never showed up in the live-action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon so I never got to use them in any capacity.
I started at the very beginning of the Sailor Moon Stars footage because the first episode was a big re-introduction to the Outer Senshi characters. I figured that would make for a good starting off point to bring these characters into the Hell universe. I was pretty much shoehorned into using the first storyarch of Sailor Moon Stars in its entirity because it set up everything needed to get into the season proper. Unfortunately, the first story arch is finishing up the bullshit leftover from the previous season, so I had my work cut out for me.

O RLY?
Thankfully the anime didn’t detract from the personalities I had already established for the main characters. Anime Usagi is just as ridiculous as the live-action version, and vice versa. The only real change I made to the old cast was making Luna and Artemis a couple of Lolcats. I was at the height of my Lolcat obsession at the time, but seriously I think it’s still pretty funny. The German voices used for the cats help the Lolcat speak sound more genuine.
The rest of the cast introduced into this episode fell into place quite nicely. Uranus and Neptune have about a thousand built-in lesbian and incest jokes without my interferance, so adapting them took little effort. I added the bit about Michiru not being able to conceive kids as an afterthought, but it kind of became a running theme with her character.

Babies get no respect
Pluto and Saturn were a little harder to place because they’re both kind of strange characters. Especially because Hotaru starts out as a baby in these episodes. I took the baby aspect and ran with in, making Hotaru be Setsuna’s child that she didn’t want anymore. The rest of Setsuna’s character I filled in with references to the fact that Pluto is no longer considered a planet. I know, that’s kind of an obvious joke to make, and I don’t care either.

Just like Jesus she's back!
The first episode is sort of a blur to me because I finished it all up in a big go. I was really excited to get started on the series and the new characters gave me the gumption to get at it. The first episode is severely streamlined and really is only made up of a few couple scenes. This is because I wanted to hurry the plot along. The Nehelenia story arc was six episodes in the original version. I wanted to cut it down to four (and even this felt like way too long to linger on a villain who is never seen again.)
Streamlining was the name of the game with this series. Even the openings and endings I wanted to have a slight uniform feel to. It was my intention to keep all of the episodes around the same length, which was to say I didn’t want any episode to be over 20 minutes. This was because Youtube cuts you off at 10 minutes and I didn’t want any episodes to requires a viewer to load more than two videos. I think it’s hard enough to direct viewers who stumble upon the video to the other half as it is. I always have way more hits on one half of an episode than the other. And for some reason, it’s not always the first half either.
Stay tuned as we take a look at the rest of Teufel this week. Oh and I MAY have another web exclusive for you guys!
Oh yeah and I’ll just leave this here.
